Many people may question the necessity of learning more about cybersecurity. However, as the world relies more heavily on information technology infrastructure, it becomes more important for everyone to understand cybersecurity. With this knowledge, consumers will be able to more effectively protect themselves against cybersecurity attacks.
A Brief History of Cyber Attacks
When cyber criminals first started launching cyber attacks, their main target was big businesses with large revenues. The cyber criminals would use ransomware to hold the companies data for ransom. The company would be required to pay a fee to have their data safely returned. Attackers knew that these companies would be more willing to pay large sums of money to retrieve their data.
These attackers used a shotgun approach to attack companies. In other words, they tried to attack hundreds or thousands of companies without implementing a specific strategy for each. This resulted in many unsuccessful cybersecurity attacks.
In more recent years, cyber criminals have adopted a more strategic approach to attacking companies. Instead of sending thousands of attacks at once, they narrowed their scope to one company. They researched the company to understand its areas of weakness and then devised a plan to exploit those specific weaknesses. This resulted in a much higher success rate for the attackers, allowing them to penetrate the defenses of even the most secure companies.
Additionally, attackers have started to target smaller businesses and individuals. Even though these targets result in a smaller pay out, they are typically easier to penetrate. Regardless of the specific tactics used, cyber criminals are able to generate substantial revenue from their attacks. According to some estimates, cyber crime is expected to cost companies $10.5 trillion by 2025.
